Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog – I hope you are all well!
It’s Skincare Sunday today and it is all about skincare advice for people who have sensitive skin!
I don’t think I’m alone when I say that having sensitive skin can kinda freak you out a little in the sense that you so innocently try products that everyone claims is a ‘hero product’ and they claim it changes lives but really, it changes yours for the worst because you wake up with breakouts, redness and some serious flakey skin! We’ve all been there, right?
To help eliminate the product that causes you this reaction, you have to be so careful when introducing new products into your routine because it can even be a reaction caused by the makeup your using on top of your skincare- it’s a bit of a game and it’s certainly a game none of us want to play! So today, I thought I would talk about what ingredients to avoid if you suffer with sensitive skin (this is very much my own personal opinion and it may differ but this is based on my experience!)

Ingredients to avoid:
1 // Harsh Exfoliants
If you have skin that’s easily irritated, using an exfoliator that is too abrasive & rough can cause your skin to be immediately inflamed and the redness will show almost instantly. It’s important that you opt for more gentle exfoliators to help avoid any skin flare-ups.
2 // Alcohol
If, like me, you really suffer with sensitive/dry skin, try avoiding products that contain alcohol because this makes the product dry quicker which will reduce the moisture levels so your skin will be dry and itchy – this will be uncomfortable and can effect the way makeup is applied onto the skin! Many people with oily skin tend to use products that contain alcohol to dry up the excess oil, but there comes up a point where the skin becomes too dry, which damages the skin’s barrier.
3 // Fragrance
Again, try and avoid products that contain a lot of fragrance as this can potentially weaken the inner layers of skin especially if harsh chemicals have been used to create the fragrance in the product – this can irritate skin whether it’s sensitive or not, so always be careful. Look out for the ‘fragrance-free’ products!
4 // Parabens
Parabens are a low-cost synthetic preservative and they prevent the growth of bacteria and mould in cosmetic products. However, they can commonly cause skin sensitivities and allergies.
5 // Salicylic acid
The most annoying thing about having sensitive skin is the fact that all the latest trends and hero products are probably the least suitable if you suffer with sensitive skin! Although salicylic acid is amazing and it’s like the holy grail ingredient for many; it’s definitely one to avoid if you don’t want to dry your skin out. It targets blackheads, whiteheads and acne but for those with sensitive skin, it can cause dryness and initiation (probably because it is so powerful at what it does!!)
So now we’ve discussed products to avoid, I have put together a list of ingredients that are much better for sensitive skin – if you would like me to do a whole post about these products then let me know in the comments!
Here are a few ingredients to look out for when buying products as they are much more suited to people who have sensitive skin!
- Rose Water
- Bakuchiol
- Aloe
- Jojoba oil
- Chamomile
- Oatmeal
Have a good day everyone!
